HRC Faculty

Mihir Kanade (India) is the Director of the UPEACE Human Rights Centre and is also a faculty member in the Department of International Law and Human Rights at UPEACE. Prior to his pursuit in academia, Mihir practiced for several years as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court, focusing on issues of fundamental human rights violations. He has served as a legal advisor to many human rights organizations in India and has represented them before different courts and tribunals in criminal, constitutional and labour cases. His principal area of academic research and study is Human Rights and Globalization.
Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo (Venezuela) is the Faculty Chair of the UPEACE Human Rights Centre and the Head of Department of International Law and Human Rights at UPEACE. He is also an Associate Professor of International Law at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas since 1998 and Professor of Humanitarian International Law at the Universidad Sergio Arboleda in Bogota since 2009. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Washington College of Law at the American University in 2008-2009. He served as Jurist to the Regional Delegation of Venezuela and the Caribbean of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo has a Law Degree, Master in International Law and Doctorate from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas and a Master Degree from Oxford University, UK.
Haroutian Akdedian (Lebanon) is a Research Fellow at the UPEACE Human Rights Centre and a PhD Candidate at the Department of International Law and Human Rights at UPEACE. Harout has a Masters Degree in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes from UPEACE and his present research interest includes analyzing Border Disputes and Trans-Boundary Disputes from the human right perspective of self-determination.
Rafael Robertos Matsushima (Mexico) is the Project Development Officer at the UPEACE Human Rights Centre. He holds a Masters Degree in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes from UPEACE and has extensive experience in project management.

Pamela Kovacs (Canada) is an intern at the Project Development Department of the UPEACE Human Rights Centre and a Masters Candidate in the Department of International Law and Human Rights at UPEACE. She has a degree in Commerce (BComm) with double concentrations in International Business & Strategic Management from McGill University and a law degree (LLB/JD) from the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to UPEACE, Pam practiced law at a large Canadian law firm and was the Executive Director and In-House Counsel at a non-profit organization which focused on access to justice, pro bono, and poverty law issues.

Ana Cristina Vasquez (Costa Rica) is a Research Associate at the UPEACE Human Rights Centre. She is an anthropologist by education and has extensive experience in civil society movements for promotion of human rights and human security in Costa Rica.
